Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.
Video review systems will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Competitors will gain the ability to challenge certain rulings made by the official, mirroring the system already in place at both the US Open and the Aussie major.
The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.
This step follows just a season following the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old role of line officials.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to review other decisions, including:
- Whether a ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
- Potential hindrance end of a rally.
Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a player can request.
Case in Point
An illustrative example took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.
Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."
The umpire viewed a video and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
This technology aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at all of its events.
Other Changes
Another change at The Championships this year involves the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This addresses situations where fans have sometimes been unsure if a shot was in or out.
In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
